The process of gasification with the fluidized bed apparatus can be suitable for the production of high calorific value gases or synthesis gas from fluidizable solids. In contrast to grate systems and rotary kilns, the fluidized bed reacts very sensitively to the fuel properties. Process engineering research and development is therefore advisable for application ideas that have not yet been established, in order to avoid any surprises in the event of large-scale implementation.
A laboratory and a pilot plant version are set up in the North Hall of the Thermal Process Technology Department.
While the small fluidized bed can be operated as a gasification and combustion reactor, the large fluidized bed is specially designed for the production of synthesis gas from carbon-rich materials by gasification. If a high-purity product gas is to be produced for synthesis purposes, the ABSART system (see CO2 scrubbing from flue gases) can be connected.
