34th ITAD-VDI Conference on Thermal Waste Treatment 2022
In Würzburg, Dr Vodegel reported on the status of the DrACO2 project
The thermal waste treatment industry is facing its next challenge: the carbon from the carbon dioxide produced during incineration is to be recirculated and only minimally released into the atmosphere. This requires the separation of CO2 from the waste gas and its purification to a high level of purity.
An audience of 170 people from ministries, authorities, waste incineration plant operators, plant constructors, engineering firms and associations gathered in Würzburg to discuss the framework conditions and measures for 5th generation plants. The focus was on legal, technical, authorisation and public relations issues. Dr Vodegel from the Thermal Process Technology department reported on the status of the DrACO2 joint R&D project. It became clear that a high technical standard already exists throughout Europe for the separation of CO2 from the exhaust gas of coal-fired power stations; however, progress still needs to be made for the application in waste incineration with regard to the energy requirements of the process and the stability of the solvents. The time pressure for this exciting task is high, as there is great interest in the results.
